Most governance today inherits its basic unit — the nation-state — from history, war, and treaty rather than from any coherent claim about what makes a good unit of self-governance. The result puts a Catalonia inside a Madrid-run Spain, a Slovenia formally equal to but practically outweighed by states many times its size, and a Yucatán tourist economy governed identically to Guatemala's highland Maya communities two countries away — not because any of these pairings reflect a shared culture, economy, or genuine consent, but because a border was drawn somewhere and never revisited.

Meta-democracy is the wager that a better default unit exists: a region defined by cultural-economic coherence — shared identity, a real urban center or centers, a diversified enough economy to plausibly stand on its own — rather than by whichever empire, civil war, or colonial administrator drew the current map. Germany already works this way internally, as several centers of gravity (Berlin, Munich, Cologne/the Ruhr) rather than one; the wager is that most of the world could, too, if its borders were redrawn around identity and function instead of inherited administrative convenience.

This only works paired with a strong shared identity above the regional layer — European, continental, or eventually planetary — so that decentralizing power downward doesn't just fragment it. Redrawing borders is not itself the point: the point is real functional self-governance at whatever scale a community can actually sustain itself, checked by an actual measurement of how self-sufficient it is (water, food, shelter, energy, transport, health, clothing) rather than by assertion.

This site is where that argument gets tested against real geography and real data, not just stated. The flagship artifact is a world map — regions drawn by identity across 11 geopolitical blocs, scored for self-sufficiency where the research exists, honestly marked "not assessed" where it doesn't yet. It started as a Europe-only project (preserved in the museum); the map, data, and methodology below are where it stands now.
